From the moment students accept their offer until they graduate, CIET provides tools and assistance to help students make the most of their time in Australia. CIET goes out of its way to make students feel at ease and help them acclimate to their new surroundings. We get in touch with students on a regular basis to gather feedback on their CIET experience, and we strive to improve and expand our offerings. As a result, there is a supportive and safe environment, which is crucial in ensuring that every student may reach their full potential.

Student support officers

Canberra Institute of Education and Technology understands that there are general or personal circumstances that may adversely affect overseas student’s education in Australia. CIET has a range of useful links and contacts ranging from student support, academic/learning and personal/social issues. These resources are available to support overseas students in adjusting to study and life in Australia. An orientation program will be compulsory for all students prior to commencing their course. The Orientation is a great way to meet other students, tour the College and familiarise yourself with the facilities and resources available and meet the team of dedicated staff that will support you through your learning journey. Information provided will include but is not limited to:

  • support services available and how these can be accessed
  • English language and study assistance programs
  • relevant legal services
  • emergency and health services
  • policies and procedures
  • requirements for course attendance and progress
  • information on employment rights and conditions

CIET offers a free training support service available to all students who have any questions or difficulties regarding their current training or future career development. Trainers will be able to provide students with the information they need to help them achieve their own academic and career path. We will respect your right to privacy. Any information disclosed will remain strictly confidential. Students have access to the Student Support Officer to gain advice and guidance on personal or social issues. Where the issues are identified of a more sensitive nature which is affecting student study and stay in Australia such as but not limited to:

  • Depression
  • mental Stress
  • personal issues or traumatic events that occurred requiring professional help

The referral to an external professional counselling service will be provided. CIET offers a free referral to specialists in the field.

A critical incident is a traumatic event or the threat of a traumatic event that occurs either within Australia or within the student’s home country and which causes extreme stress, fear or injury. The term critical incident is very diverse but includes such events as:

Missing student, Fire/storm/natural disaster, Assault/shooting, Domestic violence, sexual assault, drug or alcohol abuse, missing relatives especially parents or siblings, Natural disaster, Political change, Acts of war or other conflict or Religious persecution.

Orientation program

The CIET’s orientation programme, which is available to all new students upon their arrival at the CIET, is an important part of our support services. We provide information on all elements of CIET’s functioning and culture during this conference. The student Welfare Officer speaks to students about their role in providing information and support in areas such as adjusting to a new culture, dealing with relationship and family issues, dealing with homesickness, stress or depression, time management, and motivation during the orientation programme.
Students learn about the Support Services available to them, the climate conditions in the ACT, CIET regulations and procedures, and other information that will help them have a safe and comfortable stay in Australia during the orientation session.

Emergency contacts and other useful information

Provide reference services for accommodation. How to find a place to stay is well-informed.
Students are told about the process and sent to the Immigration office for renewal. The website www.immi.gov.au is recommended.

A registered training organisation (RTO) is a provider registered by ASQA (or a state regulator) to deliver nationally recognised VET training and qualifications. An R.T.O is a Registered Training Organisation delivering Vocational Education and Training courses in Australia.


The courses offered at RTOs focus on the skills and knowledge required for specific employment in the industry. All the courses are based on practical and hands-on experience according to the Australian government’s requirements and standards. Specified in the Australian Qualifications Framework, known as AQF. RTOs can be either privately registered businesses or government owned Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions.
